Your Weekly Music Lesson #2 ‘Chords’ !

OK so here it is! Last week we learned the notes, this week we start building Chords A, D, and E in order to write Songs! Rip out that instrument, turn up the volume, skip dinner, and GET READY! It all starts here.

1.) Be passionate 2.) Be patient 3.) Do it EVERYDAY. You’ll get it, I PROMISE!

The 3 chords that I discuss are the A Chord, D Chord, and E Chord. I also explain the Notes in Music and how their built up. As a result I pull out my Saxophone! What I try to explain to people is that Learning one instrument is like learning them all. tey all follow the same language, and rules. Obviously, the playing technique for them is differen, but all in all, it the same language.

So watch this and also at the 10 minute mark is a huge shout section that we all give. Using the power of Ustream.TV and Twitter I called my community over and recorded everyone at my Ustream.TV Music Show

This is my new show hosted on Revision3 Beta. Big ups to all the peeps who submitted the show to Digg. I now have the YOU Section all set up. So all the pictures, videos, and poems you send me I post there.

Also, here’s the link to the actual Viddler page with my video.

Thanks guys for everything… week 3 is gonna RAWK!

    Hi Walt,

First off…you ROCK! Thanks so much for taking all the time to help the rest of us to learn music!

Regarding your tutuorial on guitar tabs, I learned it a different way. I learned that on the tabs the numbers refer to what FRET you are supposed to put a finger on, not what finger you are supposed to use. For instance if there is a #3 on the B string that means you are supposed to hold down that string on fret #3. Some of the songs I have tabs for the numbers go up to 8, 10, or even 14 in some instances because those are the frets in which I am supposed to hold a certain string down.

Any comments as to why your version of reading tabs is different?

    Thanks!!!
    Lisa

OK, well reading Chord Diagrams and Reading TABS are two completely different things :)

Thank you so much man! I bought myself a squier guitar a few days back and I looked online for some lessons. And came across some pretty bad ones. :( But thankfully I came across you and things are making a TON more sense.

For example, the lesson that I was taking on the other site didn’t really explain things that well and I thought you had to play the D chord on the Top strings E,A,and D. It was the same diagram you have too, so I was trying to reach for the top string with my ring finger and it kept muting A.

Now I look back on that and just laugh. Thanks again!

Yeah, maybe you should label this as “guitar lessons” or something. Yeah yeah I know music is universal, but still… Not much to get from this one for us sitting in front of a keyboard :)

    I love your effort though!

First and most importantly I’d like to let you know that you are inspiring me!! Also looking for an affirmation. I play guitar left handed so I’m assuming your lesson still applies but the notes are backwards??

    Hey Walt!

I’ve seen your videos and really like em. I’ve learned a lot of music theory with your videos and I came up with a question I thought I could ask you!

While playing a song I was analyzing the chords in it. I found a ”different” chord in the progression and I don’t know what type of chord it is. The progression went like Cm, B and then the chord which’s name I don’t know. The notes of the chord are: A# – D# – F#
It’s one halfstep away from becoming a B. What is the name of this type of chords? And how would be this chord called?

    Thanks!

Walt, you’re revolutionary man! ( : The fact that you seem so excited giving the lesson makes the lessons exciting. One thing that can be bad in any form of education is if the teacher doesn’t seem excited about the subject matter, and approaches it in an uninteresting / uninterested way. That can turn me off. But you make this stuff heaps of fun!! Thanks man.

    • http://www.fororchestra.com WaltRibeiro

No prob Carl! The only way to be is excited. Being anything else means you’re not meant to be doing it. You should be thrilled about everything in your life – from relationships, to friends, the music you write, even to your career, etc. And if anything isn’t making you THRILLED and SCREAMING about it, then change it :)

      • http://twitter.com/benway1 Carl

That is a great Point of View Walt.
I’ll have to try and keep that one at the forefront of my skull-noodle !!
You are a wise young Buddha (:

Walt, you are a riot to learn from. One of your lessons in less than a minute taught me what I hadn’t learned in 25 years. It unlocked something in my head and suddenly I understood. I didn’t know the question to ask and you answered it. Thanks so much. I have had a guitar for 25 plus years and have never mastered it. Always getting frustrated and setting it back in the stand. Thank you. our an inspiration.

    • http://www.fororchestra.com WaltRibeiro

how’s it coming along Dan? Still practicing I hope. Right? Right? :)
